Stewart Wingate
Celebrating National Appren-ticeship week
As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2017  (6th – 10th March) and to tie into Gatwick’s 40th anniversary of apprenticeship recruitment, Gatwick launched a series of ‘Back to the Floor’ sessions with senior members of staff revisiting their apprenticeship roots.
Stewart Wingate, Gatwick’s Chief Executive Officer, Tony Yates, Gatwick’s Head of Engineering and Helen Cowper, Gatwick’s Operations Development Lead, all began their careers as engineering apprentices and were each paired with one of Gatwick’s current apprentices to perform a series of engineering based tasks together across the airport. Watch videos of the senior leaders talking about their experiences below.

Support for life-saving blood and transplant deliveries
Gatwick Airport has sponsored a new car to the Sussex Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers (SERV) to facilitate secure deliveries around the whole county. At night, the local charity provides a free, rapid and reliable means of transporting emergency blood products, X-rays, patient notes, time-critical laboratory samples and test results
to hospitals and medical facilities, within the local NHS Trusts. During the day, the charity collects and delivers human donor milk for premature babies throughout London and the South-East and supports the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust Children’s Nursing Teams in Crawley and Worthing.  All of the charity officers are independently assessed, unpaid volunteers who ensure cover any night of the week, when requested.

The new hybrid Toyota Prius, provided by the airport, is a welcome addition to the vehicles already owned by the charity and will help ensure its service continues to benefit the South-East. Visit for more information.
New recycling plant
Gatwick’s world class innovative recycling plant
Gatwick has become the first airport in the world to dispose of Category 1 waste on site and convert into energy – an issue that costs the aviation sector around £500 million a year.

Category 1 forms the majority of waste from non-EU flights and is defined as food waste or anything mixed with it – such as packaging, cups, meal trays - from international transport vehicles. Its disposal is governed by strict rules that - until now - require specialist processing offsite to protect against the potential spread of disease and infectious material.

However, Gatwick’s new £3.8million processing plant – delivered in partnership with DHL - will not only dispose of this waste safely on site, it will also convert it - and all other organic waste - into energy to power the new plant and heat the North Terminal. Gatwick currently treats 2,200 tonnes of Category 1 waste each year – around 20% of the total generated at the airport (10,500 tonnes) – and the new energy plant will process around 10 tonnes a day.
